    This image is a sketched map of the Casa Grande Ruins National Monument. The map identifies all sites at features of the Monument known at that time. The features are identified as to what they were and given an approximate date of use within the Classic Period of the Hohokam Indian culture. The map outlines potential boundries for both the sites and the entire area of inhabitation.

The provide a detail of the structural integrity of the shelter roof and foundation. They provide dimensions along with spacial coverage as it relates to the Great House. They were prepared for the Office of the Chief Engineer of the National Park Service, Department of the Interior.

  • Prehistoric Irrigation Canals (1922)

    This image is a 1922 map of prehistoric irrigation systems throughout the Salt River Valley. The map indicated where the Salt River meets the Gila River. The map labels and indicates the location of both the prehistoric irrigation canals and prehistoric settlements. Further, the map shows locations of petroglyph sites. The image also includes a short pamphlet outlining the history of the Hohokam existence and important time lines.

  • The Prehistoric Irrigation of the Casa Grande Ruins Area of the Gila River in Southern Arizona (1963)

    This image reflects both prehistoric and historic landmarks as well as irrigation water ways feeding from the Gila River. In addition, the map shows roads, highways, modern canals, railroad line, cemeteries, modern buildings and their location surrounding the Gila River and Casa Grande Ruins. Every canal and ruin shown on the map was measured, photographed an dplotted to scale.

    This image is a map of the prehistoric irrigation system of the Salt River Valley by Frank Midvale. The map shows how the canal system branches from the Salt River and where the river connects to the Gila River. The individual canals are named and listed and the prehistoric cities and important geographical locations are listed and named as well.

The detail includes specifics regarding materials used, sizes and placement of these materials. The maps also detail holes made in the wall structures themselves to allow proper drainage.

    This project concerns the astronomical features of the Great House at Casa Grande Ruins National Monument. It covers all times periods of Hohokam existence including the Pioneer, Colonial, Sedentary and Classic periods. There are comparisons drawn to other prehistoric sites such as Chichen Itza in their construction and application. There is discussion regarding the use of the astronmical features to track the winter and summer solstices.

  • Cosmos Mindeleff

    Cosmos Mindeff reported on the stabilization and preservation activities at Casa Grande Ruins in 1891 in the Thirteenth Annual Report of the Bureau of Ethnology. This work is the first known incident of the federal government actively preserving a prehistoric site. Casa Grande Ruins was established as the first cultural preserve the following year in 1892. Additional documents within this project include maps, correspondence, and references related to this work.
