Pueblo Grande (AZ U:9:1(ASM)): Unit 11, Van Buren and 44th Streets: SSI DMB Testing and Data Recovery, Ceramic Rough Sort (RS_CERAMICS) Data

Summary

The DMB Property Testing and Data Recovery Ceramic Rough Sort (RS_CERAMICS) Data sheet contains data from the rough sort analysis of ceramics recovered during the DMB testing and data recovery project (SSI Project No. 97-02) at Pueblo Grande, Unit 11. It contains information on ceramic types, tempers and counts; it also records vessel and rim forms where applicable. The data sheet also contains rim circumference and rim diameter measurements when possible.

Column Name Data Type Type Category Coding Sheet Ontology Search
FS The field specimen (FS) number assigned to given ceramics in the field. It is essential that the PD # and the FS # remain associated to identify a given ceramic artifact. For each PD #, the FS #s range from 1 to n.
BIGINT  Uncoded Value Provenience and Context : Item/Slash none none true
SITE The Arizona State Museum (ASM) number of the site under investigation.
VARCHAR  Uncoded Value Provenience and Context : Site none none true
TIME_DATE_STAMP The date stamp generated by the Advanced Revelation (AREV) database software when the record of a given ceramic analysis was originally created in the data set.
VARCHAR  Uncoded Value uncategorized none none true
ARTIFACT_TYPE The general artifact type of a given artifact specimen from a particular PD unit. Please refer to the Soil Systems, Inc. Artifact Type Coding Sheet for a list of all available artifact types.
BIGINT  Coded Value Ceramic : Form Soil Systems, Inc. Artifact Type Coding Sheet none true
COUNT For each PD and FS #, the number of pottery sherds that have the same ceramic ware type, temper type, and vessel form.
BIGINT  Count Ceramic none none true
TYPE The name of the ceramic ware and type that best describes the design style of a given ceramic artifact. Please refer to the Soil Systems, Inc. Ceramic Ware and Type Coding Sheet for a list of all available ceramic wares and types.
BIGINT  Coded Value Ceramic : Type Soil Systems, Inc. Ceramic Ware and Type Coding Sheet none true
PROJECT The Soil Systems, Inc. project number that resulted in the recovery of the ceramic assemblage in the data set.
VARCHAR  Uncoded Value Provenience and Context : Project none none true
PD The provenience designation (PD) number that identifies the unit from which a given ceramic artifact was recovered. It is essential that the PD # and the FS # remain associated to identify a given ceramic artifact. For each PD #, the FS #s range from 1 to n.
BIGINT  Uncoded Value Provenience and Context : Horizontal Location none none true
FEATURE_NUMBER The number of a feature identified and documented in a given PD unit. At each site, feature numbers were assigned from 1 to n. Subfeature numbers include the associated feature number followed by a decimal; subfeature numbers begin at .01 for each feature. For example, the second subfeature excavated in Feature 15 is coded as 15.02.
DOUBLE  Uncoded Value Provenience and Context : Feature ID/Number none none true
ANALYSIS_DATE The date on which the ceramics in a given FS were analyzed.
VARCHAR  Uncoded Value Storage : Other none none true
RIM_FILLET The presence/absence and basic description of a fillet on a vessel's rim.
BIGINT  Coded Value Ceramic : Form Soil Systems, Inc. Vessel Rim Fillet Coding Sheet none true
RIM_ANGLE The form or shape (e.g., straight, outcurved, flared, etc.) of a pottery vessel's (or sherd's) rim. The shape description is based on the appearance of the rim in profile view.
BIGINT  Coded Value Ceramic : Form Soil Systems, Inc. Vessel Rim Angle Coding Sheet none true
WEIGHT The measured weight of (in grams) of the ceramic artifacts from the same FS and with the same ceramic type, temper type, and vessel form.
BIGINT  Measurement (gram) Ceramic : Weight none none true
VESSEL_FORM A basic description of the inferred or observed form (e.g., bowl, jar, scoop, etc.) of a ceramic vessel.
BIGINT  Coded Value Ceramic : Form Soil Systems, Inc. Vessel Form Coding Sheet none true
FEATURE_TYPE The inferred type (i.e., function and/or cultural use, significance) of a given feature. Please refer to Soil Systems, Inc. Feature Type Coding Sheet for a list of all available feature types.

BIGINT  Measurement (centimeter) Ceramic : Form none none true
RIM_DIAMETER The estimated or measured greatest diameter between two opposite endpoints on a vessel's rim.
BIGINT  Measurement (centimeter) Ceramic : Form none none true
RIM_LIP The form or shape (e.g., round, flat, tapered, etc) of a vessel's lip.

SHERD_TEMPER The presence/absence of sherd temper (i.e., grog temper) in a pottery sherd or vessel.
BIGINT  Coded Value Ceramic : Other Soil Systems, Inc. Sherd Temper Coding Sheet none true
TEMPER A basic description of the temper type identified in a ceramic artifact, predominantly pottery sherds and vessels. Many of the temper types describe particular types of geologic types and/or raw materials (e.g., schist, phyllite, micah and quartz sand, etc.). Some temper type designations include geographic source information with a raw material description (e.g., Squaw Peak schist).
BIGINT  Coded Value Ceramic : Other Soil Systems, Inc. Ceramic Temper Coding Sheet none true
AUDIT_VERSION The Soil Systems, Inc. relational database originally contained audit tables for each artifact/analysis type to track updates/changes made to the primary data tables. Database managers recorded changes to particular data values in these audit tables. The changes were then passed on to the main data table (e.g., RS_CERAMICS). The AUDIT_VERSION number refers to the "audit number" for that particular row. Thus, if a data row contains an AUDIT_VERSION value of "2", then that row has been updated/changed with the audit-version number 2 (i.e., it has been updated two times).
BIGINT  Uncoded Value uncategorized none none true

Notes

General Note: These data were extracted from SSI's Advanced Revelation (AREV) relational database. The flat data set presented here represent a near complete extraction of the RS_CERAMICS_DATA table in AREV database 97-02 DMB PG.

General Note: Please note that SSI recorded the Pueblo Grande number as AZ U:9:7(ASM), which is the designation for a portion of Pueblo Grande. The correct number for the site as a whole is AZ U:9:1(ASM).
