Pueblo Grande (AZ U:9:1(ASM)): Unit 08, Pueblo Grande Cultural Park: SSI PG Museum Expansion Data Recovery, Rough Sort Lithic (RS_LITHICS) Data
Part of the Pueblo Grande (AZ U:9:1(ASM)): Unit 08, Pueblo Grande Cultural Park: Soil Systems, Inc. Pueblo Grande Museum Expansion Data Recovery project
Creator(s): Lorrie Lincoln-Babb; Maria Martin
Year: 1994
Summary
The Pueblo Grande Museum Expansion Data Recovery project rough sort lithic data set presents basic information on the chipped and ground stone artifacts recovered during this investigation. It provides information about the artifact type, the lithic raw material type, and the lithic condition (whole or fragmentary) for sets of lithic artifacts.

Column Name | Data Type | Type | Category | Coding Sheet | Ontology | Search |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
LITHIC_CONDITION | The completeness (e.g., whole, fragmentary) of lithic artifacts in a given FS. The available coded conditions are Whole and Fragmentary. | |||||
BIGINT | Coded Value | Chipped Stone : Form | Soil Systems, Inc. Lithic Condition Coding Sheet | none | true | |
ARTIFACT_TYPE | The general artifact type of a given artifact specimen from a particular PD unit. Please refer to Soil Systems, Inc. Artifact Type Coding Sheet for a list of available artifact types. | |||||
BIGINT | Coded Value | uncategorized | Soil Systems, Inc. Artifact Type Coding Sheet | none | true | |
LITHIC_MATERIAL | The material type that best describes the raw material from which a lithic artifact is made. Please refer to Soil Systems, Inc. Lithic Material Type Coding Sheet for a list of material types. | |||||
BIGINT | Coded Value | Chipped Stone : Material | Soil Systems, Inc. Lithic Material Type Coding Sheet | none | true | |
FEATURE_TYPE | The inferred type (i.e., function and/or cultural use, significance) of a given feature. Please refer to Soil Systems, Inc. Feature Type Coding Sheet for a list of available feature types. | |||||
BIGINT | Coded Value | Provenience and Context : Feature Type | Soil Systems, Inc. Feature Type Coding Sheet | none | true | |
PROJECT | The designated SSI project number during which the FS was recovered. | |||||
VARCHAR | Uncoded Value | Provenience and Context : Project | none | none | true | |
PD | The provenience designation (PD) unit from which a given FS was collected. It is essential that the PD number remain associated with the FS #. A combination of the PD unit No. and the FS No. identifies a unique FS from that unit. | |||||
BIGINT | Uncoded Value | Provenience and Context : Horizontal Location | none | none | true | |
FEATURE_NUMBER | The number of a feature identified and documented in a given PD unit. At each site, feature numbers were assigned from 1 to n. Subfeature numbers include the associated feature number followed by a decimal; subfeature numbers begin at .01 for each feature. For example, the second subfeature excavated in Feature 15 is coded as 15.02. | |||||
DOUBLE | Uncoded Value | Provenience and Context : Feature ID/Number | none | none | true | |
LITHIC_TOTAL | The total number of lithic artifacts in a given FS. | |||||
BIGINT | Uncoded Value | Chipped Stone : Count | none | none | true | |
SITE | The ASM site number of the site(s) under investigation during a given project. | |||||
VARCHAR | Uncoded Value | Provenience and Context : Site | none | none | true | |
FS | The field specimen number assigned to an artifact type from a given PD unit. Note that one FS # is assigned to multiple artifacts of the same type from a single PD unit. See detailed analysis data tables (i.e., ceramic tables, shell tables, etc) for artifact counts. In the field, specimen numbers were assigned to bags of like artifacts from the same PD. When artifacts were collected, a specimen number was assigned to a bag that contained particular artifact types from a PD unit. Thus, a separate FS # was assigned to the ceramics, lithics, groundstone, etc that were recovered from a PD. Specimen numbers run from 1 to n for each PD unit. Thus, to identify a specific specimen, an analyst must use a combination of the PD No and the FS No. | |||||
BIGINT | Uncoded Value | Provenience and Context : Item/Slash | none | none | true | |
LITHIC_COMMENTS | Additional description and/or notes on lithic artifacts in a given FS. If an artifact was categorized as "unidentified" or "other," it should be described in this field. Note that this field was typically NOT entered into the SSI's AREV digital database. | |||||
BIGINT | Uncoded Value | Chipped Stone : Other | none | none | true |

Notes
General Note: Soil Systems analysts stored all provenience and artifact data for post-Hohokam Expressway Pueblo Grande projects in a relational database program called Advanced Revelations (AREV). The provenience and artifact data tables were standardized within this database. Thus, the lithic data tables from this project and other Pueblo Grande projects were created and stored in the same format. Most of the lithic data was stored directly in the FS_DATA table for a given project. In some instances, the lithic data were saved out from the FS table into an RS_LITHIC_OUT table. In this instance, the PG Museum Expansion data recovery lithic data were saved out into an RS_LITHIC_OUT table. The data sheet presented here has been extracted from the RS_LITHIC_OUT table in SSI's AREV database.
General Note: The lithic data from this project should be directly compatible with the lithic data from all other Soil Systems, Inc. Pueblo Grande projects, because the data were created in a standardized format (see above). Users can easily integrate this lithic data with the data from other SSI projects.
General Note: Please note that SSI recorded the Pueblo Grande number as AZ U:9:7(ASM), which is the designation for a portion of Pueblo Grande. The correct number for the site as a whole is AZ U:9:1(ASM).
