Pueblo Grande (AZ U:9:1(ASM)): Unit 14, Washington Park Development Area: SSI SunAmerica, Inc. Data Recovery, Ceramic Rough Sort (RS_CERAMICS) Data

Summary

The Sun America Data Recovery and Burial Removal project Ceramic Rough Sort (RS_CERAMICS) Data sheet contains data from the rough sort analysis of ceramics recovered during the Sun America data recovery project. It contains information on ceramic types, tempers and counts; it also records vessel and rim forms where applicable. The data sheet also contains rim circumference and rim diameter measurements for some ceramic specimens.

Column Name Data Type Type Category Coding Sheet Ontology
SHERD_TEMPER A presence/absence designation to code for the use of crushed sherds as a tempering agent
BIGINT  Coded Value Ceramic : Temper/Inclusions Soil Systems, Inc. Sherd Temper Coding Sheet none
TEMPER A basic description of the temper type identified in a ceramic artifact, predominantly pottery sherds and vessels. Many of the temper types describe particular types of geologic types and/or raw materials (e.g., schist, phyllite, micah and quartz sand, etc.). Some temper type designations include geographic source information with a raw material description (e.g., Squaw Peak schist).
BIGINT  Coded Value Ceramic : Other Soil Systems, Inc. Ceramic Temper Coding Sheet none
RIM_LIP The form or shape (e.g., round, flat, tapered, etc) of a vessel's lip.
BIGINT  Coded Value Ceramic : Form Soil Systems, Inc. Vessel Rim Lip Shape Coding Sheet none
RIM_FILLET The presence/absence and basic description of a fillet on a vessel's rim.
BIGINT  Coded Value Ceramic : Form Soil Systems, Inc. Vessel Rim Fillet Coding Sheet none
RIM_DIAMETER The estimated or measured greatest diameter between two opposite endpoints on a vessel's rim.
BIGINT  Measurement (centimeter) Ceramic : Form none none
RIM_CIRCUMFERENCE The estimated or measured total circumference of a pottery vessel's rim.
BIGINT  Measurement (centimeter) Ceramic : Form none none
RIM_ANGLE The form or shape (e.g., straight, outcurved, flared, etc.) of a pottery vessel's (or sherd's) rim. The shape description is based on the appearance of the rim in profile view.
BIGINT  Coded Value Ceramic : Form Soil Systems, Inc. Vessel Rim Angle Coding Sheet none
AUDIT_VERSION The Soil Systems, Inc. relational database originally contained audit tables for each artifact/analysis type to track updates/changes made to the primary data tables. Database managers recorded changes to particular data values in these audit tables. The changes were then passed on to the main data table (e.g., RS_CERAMICS). The AUDIT_VERSION number refers to the "audit number" for that particular row. Thus, if a data row contains an AUDIT_VERSION value of "2", then that row has been updated/changed with the audit-version number 2 (i.e., it has been updated two times).
BIGINT  Uncoded Value uncategorized none none
SITE The Arizona State Museum (ASM) number of the site under investigation.
VARCHAR  Uncoded Value Provenience and Context : Site none none
ANALYSIS_DATE The date on which the ceramics in a given FS were analyzed.
VARCHAR  Uncoded Value Storage : Other none none
FEATURE_NUMBER The ID number that SSI archaeologists assigned to a feature in the field
DOUBLE  Uncoded Value Provenience and Context : Feature ID/Number none none
VESSEL_FORM A basic description of the inferred or observed form (e.g., bowl, jar, scoop, etc.) of a ceramic vessel.
BIGINT  Coded Value Ceramic : Form Soil Systems, Inc. Vessel Form Coding Sheet none
TYPE The name of the ceramic ware and type that best describes the design style of a given ceramic artifact. Please refer to the Soil Systems, Inc. Ceramic Ware and Type Coding Sheet for a list of all available ceramic wares and types.
BIGINT  Coded Value Ceramic : Type Soil Systems, Inc. Ceramic Ware and Type Coding Sheet none
COUNT For each PD and FS #, the number of pottery sherds that have the same ceramic ware type, temper type, and vessel form.
BIGINT  Count Ceramic none none

Notes

General Note: Soil Systems analysts stored all provenience and artifact data for post-Hohokam Expressway Pueblo Grande projects in a relational database program called Advanced Revelations (AREV). The provenience and artifact data tables were standardized within this database. Thus, the ceramic data tables from this project and other Pueblo Grande projects were created in a table named RS_CERAMICS_DATA, and saved in this table. The data sheet presented here has been extracted from the RS_CERAMICS_DATA table in SSI's AREV database.

General Note: The ceramic data from this project should be directly compatible with the ceramic data from all other Soil Systems, Inc. Pueblo Grande projects, because the data were created in a standardized format (see above). Users can easily integrate this ceramic data with the data from other SSI projects.

General Note: Please note that SSI recorded the Pueblo Grande number as AZ U:9:7(ASM), which is the designation for a portion of Pueblo Grande. The correct number for the site as a whole is AZ U:9:1(ASM).
