Archaeological Testing At Gateway Lot 4, Kitchell Development Company Property, 44th Street And Gateway Boulevard, Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona -- DRAFT REPORT
Part of the Pueblo Grande (AZ U:9:1(ASM)): Unit 12, Gateway and 44th Streets: Kitchell Development Testing project
Author(s): Banks L. Leonard
Year: 1997
Summary
On April 17 and 18, 1997, personnel from Soil Systems, Inc. (SSI) completed archaeological test excavations on a 3.8 acre parcel, Gateway Lot 4, scheduled for commercial development. Based on previous research, the parcel was believed to lie near the northwest edge of the large Hohokam site of Pueblo Grande (AZ U:9:1[ASM], see Bostwick 1993-4; Breternitz 1994; Kwiatkowski 1996). Archaeological remains incuding burials were previously documented less than 300 ft (61 m) southeast of Gateway Lot 4, in the Unit 7 area of the site of Pueblo Grande (Breternitz et al. 1990; Figure 1), and therefore it was considered likely that the subject parcel could also contain archaeological remains. Therefore, a program of test excavations was implemented prior to any construction activity at Gateway Lot 4, to investigate whether archaeological remains were present and to facilitate compliance with A.R.S. 41-865. Seventy-eight backhoe trenches were excavated and their sidewalls and backdirt were examined. No prehistoric or historic cultural remains or deposits were encountered in any of the excavations. The trenches were recorded and backfilled. No further archaeological work was recommended.

Notes
General Note: his document is a near finalized draft report. The text and tables were finalized, but the figures were not inserted into this electronic copy. Final versions of the report were produced in hard copy only, because copy-ready figures were inserted into the formatted text.
General Note: Please note that SSI recorded the Pueblo Grande number as AZ U:9:7[ASM], which is the designation for a portion of Pueblo Grande. The correct number for the site as a whole is AZ U:9:1[ASM].
