Across the Western Canal: Archaeological Monitoring and Limited Data Recovery for the Ken McDonald Golf Course Irrigation Water Line Project, Tempe, Arizona
Author(s): Matthew E. Hill, Jr.
Year: 2000
Summary
The monitoring and data recovery efforts described in this report were performed in conjunction with the city of Tempe's installation of three new irrigation water lines to support operation of the Ken McDonald Golf Course, located in Tempe, Arizona. The water lines were installed beneath the Western Canal; to do this, two bore pits were required at each of the three water line bridge locations. The initiate bore pits were excavated west of the canal and measure approximately 13- by 32-foot in extent and 10- to 15-foot-deep. The receiving pits located on the eastern side of the canal measure approximately 10- by 32-foot in extent and 10- to 15-foot deep. The bore pits were located along the edge of the canal embankment and thus affect public lands administered by the Bureau of Reclamation (Reclamation) and municipal property of the City of Tempe.
A total of five person days were expended on archaeological monitoring, and four person days were expended on data recovery efforts.
This report includes contributions by Bruce G. Phillips who conducted macrobotanical and pollen analyses.
