Archaeological Monitoring for the Replacement of a Water Main and Fire Hydrants Bounded by Central Avenue, Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona
Author(s): Michael Stubing
Year: 2009
Summary
The COP Archaeology office reviewed the project, and provided recommendations in a May 17, 2007 Archaeological Assessment. The COP Archaeology Assessment notes that several prehistoric canals, the historic Maricopa Canal, and the historic Phoenix Railway have been previously recorded within the project area. In addition, an archaeological site is located within 250 feet (ft.) of the project area. The COP Archaeology Office recommended that monitoring be conducted within the plotted locations of the historic Phoenix Railway and the Maricopa Canal, for all portions of the project area that are located within 50 ft. of the prehistoric canals and within 250 ft. of Midvale.
A segment of AZ T:12:224 (ASM) / Phoenix Street Railway and four separate canal features were found as a result of the monitoring. Additionally, a previously unrecorded site (AZ T:12:386 [ASM]) consisting of a deposit of historic trash, was discovered during construction activity located within the project area, but outside of the areas specified for monitoring.
