Results of Archaeological Testing for the City of Phoenix 67th Avenue Improvements, Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona

Author(s): Karl R. Huebchen; Bruce G. Phillips

Year: 2008

Summary

Archaeological investigations of the testing area were conducted in advance of ground disturbing activities for road improvements along 67th Avenue, Phoenix. The targeted testing area includes the projected locations of three canals, and a minimum of 250 ft on either side of their trajectories, to allow for error in their plotted locations. At the northern end of the northern testing area, testing out to 250 ft north was hampered by the dramatic narrowing of the road shoulder, and the ubiquity of various underground utilities leading from the shoulder to the residential buildings lining this portion of 67th Avenue. In the southern testing area, an area somewhat greater than 250 ft was tested, because there was sufficient width of the road shoulder to allow for heavy equipment operation, and the paucity of underground utilities in this area.

Because traces of three canals appear to have been erased throughout the project area, project activities related to the widening of 67th Avenue by the City of Phoenix are not anticipated to impact these cultural resources. The historic canal exposure discovered in the southern testing area designated as site AZ T:12:274 (ASM) had been impacted by the placement of a 60 in pipe. The recording reported here essentially exhausted the data potential of this exposure. No further investigations are recommended at this time.
