Summary
At the request of Mr. John Cichon of President Partners LP, Archaeological Consulting Services, Ltd. (ACS) conducted archaeological monitoring during rehabilitation of the Palm Oasis apartment complex in, Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona. Rehabilitation activities would include replacing utility lines and demolishing five buildings. In the HUD-Funded Program Activities Archaeological Review prepared by the City Archaeology Office (CAO) for this project, dated December 20, 2011, it was noted that several prehistoric canals are projected to cross the project area and the CAO recommended monitoring ground disturbance within 50 ft of the projected canal crossings.
Six features—one prehistoric agricultural field, two undefined prehistoric pits, two undefined historic pits, and one hearth—were profiled, mapped, and sampled. The features were assigned a new site number, AZ T:12:415(ASM). The prehistoric component of the site consists of an agricultural area, two pits of unknown function, and a hearth; paleoethnobotanical data suggest a shift toward more intensive agricultural activities at this site. The historic component is represented by two pits of unknown function. No prehistoric canals were identified.
