Summary

This document presents the results of archaeological monitoring for the 11th Street Pedestrian Improvements Project along 11th Street . The federally funded project involves improves to bus stops with new benches; installation of permeable paving and shade trees; construction of wider sidewalks with accessible ramps; and installation of pedestrian level street lighting and way-finding signage (including the installation of utility conduits for new street lamps) and removal and installation of sidewalks along a nearly 1-mile-long stretch of 11th Street. LSD monitored a total of 117 m of excavated trench in the vicinity of three prehistoric Hohokam canals (Ciudad, Barney, and Patrick), plus one alternative alignment of the Canal Ciudad, and one historic canal projected to occur in the area of potential effects (APE).

Monitoring was conducted during all trenching activity within 100 ft (50 ft on both sides) of three prehistoric canals (Ciudad, Barney and Patrick), one plausible alternative to Canal Ciudad, and one historic canal (Salt River Valley Canal) projected to cross the APE. Field investigators examined vertical and horizontal exposures of the substrate to assess whether intact cultural deposits were present, resulting in the discovery of two historic/modern features (Features 1 and 3), one possible prehistoric Hohokam relict canal segment (Feature 2), and seven isolated occurrences (IOs). No additional features or prehistoric artifacts, charcoal flecking, or evidence of culturally derived soils were identified during inspection of the remaining soil profiles.
