Archaeological Testing at Loci 2 and 3 of the West Branch Site (AZ AA:16:3 [ASM]) in the Saguaro Knolls Development, Tucson, Arizona
Author(s): David B. Tucker
Year: 2005
Summary
Archaeological testing within Loci 2 and 3 of AZ AA:16:3 (ASM), the West Branch Site, took place between October 28 and November 5, 2004. All work was carried out in accordance with the terms of the treatment plan that had been approved by Pima County on October 12, 2004. In total, 250 linear meters of backhoe trenches were excavated in Locus 2 and 810 linear meters of trenches in Locus 3.
Generally speaking, high quantities of cultural remains were found at both loci. Thirteen new archaeological features were found in Locus 2, and 46 new features in Locus 3. These investigations revealed extensive, significant deposits of cultural remains at both loci, likely representing several village segments peripheral to the core of the West Branch site. Avoidance is recommended, or archaeological mitigation if the loci cannot be avoided by development.
