Preliminary Results of Phase 1 Data Recovery and a Phase 2 Data Recovery Plan for Archaeological Sites within Christopher Columbus Park, Tucson, Pima County, Arizona

Summary

Pima County and the City of Tucson have developed a Master Plan for the expansion of facilities at Christopher Columbus Park, located on the northwestern side of Tucson, Pima County, Arizona. Previous cultural resource surveys and test excavations have identified the presence of archaeological sites within the expansion area that will be affected by implementation of the Master Plan. Phase 1 data recovery excavations were conducted to determine the extent and distribution of subsurface cultural features that might be affected by park development. The results of Phase 1 data recovery at prehistoric sites AZ AA:12:96 (ASM) and AZ AA:12:105 (ASM), and a historic-period canal, AZ AA:12:980 (ASM ) are presented in this report. Preliminary archival research was also conducted for a historic-period site, AZ AA:12:999 (ASM), that contained buildings that are no longer present. This last site will not be affected by the current phase of park development.

Fieldwork was completed between 2 October and 16 December, 2004. This work was conducted as part of the Christopher Columbus Park expansion project. Pima County has proposed construction of new recreational facilities in the park, including a soccer field, baseball fields, a dog training and agility area, parking areas, a restroom, and roads. Landscaping will be conducted in conjunction with construction of these facilities. An overview of the cultural background of the project area is provided. Subsequent chapters present the geomorphology, previous work, results of Phase I data recovery, and a Phase 2 data recovery plan. In accordance with Desert Archaeology protocol, formal site numbers, containing the state prefix (for example, AZ) and the institutional suffix (for example, ASM), are used for the first reference to a specific site in each chapter of the report and in chapter titles, headings, and figure and table captions. Other references to previously referenced sites use the site number only.
