Archaeological Investigations at AZ BB:9:7 (ASM) and at AZ BB:9:391 (ASM), Tucson, Pima County, Arizona
Editor(s): Helga Wocherl
Year: 2006
Summary
Results of archaeological investigations at two sites, AZ BB:9:391 (ASM) and AZ BB:9:7 (ASM), are detailed in this report. The work at BB:9:391 was requested by the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southern Arizona prior to construction of a Ronald McDonald House along Allen Road. The work at BB:9:7 was requested by the University Medical Center (UMC) prior to construction of the University Medical Center North.
Both sites are located on the grounds of the former Tucson General Hospital, although the two construction projects affect different portions of these grounds corresponding with portions of the two sites. BB:9:391 and BB:9:7 lie in close proximity to each other in Tucson, Pima County, Arizona.
Both sites date to Hohokam times. Based on ceramic seriation from intact features, BB:9:391 dates to the Sedentary and Classic periods (from A.D. 950-1450); BB:9:7 dates to the Classic period, but also has a rare Late Rincon phase (A.D. 1100-1150) component. The location of the sites on the Pleistocene terrace above the Rillito River is a prime setting for sustained agricultural subsistence in settled villages. As the accelerating modern settlement of the area currently leaves few places to access archaeological remains, even the limited project excavations and data collection from these two sites represent a unique opportunity. The project findings predict that additional subsurface remains are present in currently unexplored areas within the greater site boundaries and beyond.
