A Prehistoric Agricultural Field and Protohistoric Camp at AZ AA:16:335 (ASM) in the Tucson Basin: Data Recovery for the Road Widening Project
Author(s): Jonathan B. Mabry
Year: 1992
Summary
Two archaeological sites (AZ AA:16:334,335 ASM) on the edge of the Pleistocene terrace above the historic floodplain of the Santa Cruz River west of downtown Tucson, Arizona, threatened by widening of a road, were investigated to recover information prior to construction. The prehistoric rock features at site AZ AA:16:334 (ASM) were destroyed by a backhoe before this data recovery program began. On the basis of mapping of surface cultural features and artifact distributions, and total collection of artifacts from the part of the site that was directly and indirectly threatened by the road widening project, the rock features at site AZ AA:16:335 (ASM) were determined to be part of a larger, 45 hectare (110 acre) field of prehistoric rock piles, terraces, and roasting pits for agricultural production and processing during the twelfth to thirteenth centuries A.D. Protohistoric ceramic and chipped stone artifacts concentrated on the surface of the eastern edge of the site represent temporary encampments and stone tool manufacturing on the site sometime during the period from A.D. 1450 to 1750. These investigations document the preservation of significant cultural resources that support the eligibility of site AZ AA:16:335 (ASM) for the National Register of Historic Places. Sufficient information was recovered from the part of site AZ AA:16:335 (ASM) that is threatened by the road widening project, and no further archaeological mitigation in relation to that project is recommended.
