Preliminary Archaeological Testing at the West Branch Site, AZ AA:16:3, in the Saguaro Knolls Development Area
Author(s): Michael W. Lindeman
Year: 1997
Summary
This document discusses the results of preliminary archaeological work for the Saguaro Knolls development project. The Saguaro Knolls project area is a 55 a tract of land that is slated for residential development. It lies wholly within a previously recorded archaeological site, AZ AA:16:3 (ASM), the West Branch site. A recent archaeological survey confirmed that archaeological remains were present on the surface of the parcel (Stephen 1997). As a result of these findings Desert Archaeology, Inc. conducted limited archaeological testing under contract to the Schomac Group. This work had two goals: to determine if buried resources were present in the area and to provide better information to plan an archaeological compliance program for the Saguaro Knolls project area. This work was facilitated by Don Laidlaw of Don Laidlaw and Associates and carried out under the State of Arizona Antiquities Permit number 97-104ps. The fieldwork was completed between 27 and 29 August 1997 and was directed by Mike Lindeman with the assistance of Rob Ciaccio, Lambert Jose, and Loren Conde. The following sections describe the project location, archaeological background, previous research at the West Branch site, the results of the archaeological testing, and recommendations for further work in the project area.
