Archaeological Testing of the Proposed Federal Building and United States Courthouse Property

Author(s): J. Homer Thiel

Year: 1996

Summary

Archaeological testing was conducted by Desert Archaeology, Inc., at the location of the proposed Federal Building and United States Courthouse in Tucson, Arizona. Prior to testing, an archival study indicated that the property had been used as agricultural fields and stables before 1912, as a park and for railroad activities from 1913 to the mid-1930s, and as the location of a hospital from the mid-1930s to 1979. The property is currently used for the annual gem show.

Testing documented 14 archaeological features at site AZ BB:13:510 (ASM). A possible canal and a stables floor predate 1912 and the remaining features relate to the railroad and hospital facilities. Demolition activities have severely impacted these latter features. None of the features are eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places due to their disturbed nature, a lack of associated artifacts, or because better preserved examples are found elsewhere in the Tucson area.

Desert Archaeology does not recommend additional archaeological work on the property.
