Peacekeeper Program Cultural Resources Technical Report 4: Fort D.A. Russell/ F.E. Warren, Volume I
Summary
As part of the U.S. Air Force Peacekeeper Program, historical archaeological investigations were conducted from July 1983 to June 1985 at various proposed and final project localities within and adjacent to the Fort David A. Russell/Francis E. Warren Historic District on F.E. Warren Air Force Base in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Thirty-eight historic archaeological sites were identified within proposed project areas using historic maps, plans, accounts, perspectives, and aerial photographs that were verified by archaeological surveys, subsurface tests, and mitigation excavations. A chronology of construction, use, and demolition of major structures built at Fort D.A. Russell between 1867 and 1905 was developed. The majority of buildings constructed during this 38-year period no longer survive, so the chronology provides a framework to identify and date structural locations that occur today only as archaeological sites. Historic maps, plans, accounts, and perspectives identifying the earliest historic structures at Fort D.A. Russell are reproduced to substantiate inferences and to provide future researchers with an accurately dated inventory of available documents.
