Summary

In 1978, the University of Colorado began field operations for the Dolores Project Cultural Resources Mitigation Program. The Bureau of Reclamation funded the Program before constructing a multipurpose water storage and distribution system on the Dolores River. Before field investigations, a general research design was formulated that had five major problem domains: economy and adaptation, paleodemography, social organization and settlement pattern, foreign relationships, and cultural process, as well as the design of a site typology and preliminary systems of spatial and temporal units. Fieldwork was conducted on June 12, 1978, and ended on November 22, 1978. During this time Washington State University and the University of Colorado conducted excavations on seven prehistoric sites with an occupational period of 4000 B.C. to A.D. 1200. Goals of the field investigation were to assess the temporal range of artifacts collected, the variability of site types and distributions, and the quality and quantity of portable artifacts.
