Summary

Site 5MT4684, Chindi Hamlet, is a small hamlet located 400 miles west of the Dolores River in Montezuma County, Colorado. Excavations at the site by the Dolores Archaeological Project began on May 27, 1980 and finished on October 14, 1980. These investigations resulted in the discovery and recording of two typical Basketmaker III pithouses, one atypical pithouse, and two surface structures. Pithouses 1 and 2 were oriented north-south and were excavated individually as two pitstructures. Pithouse 3 was oriented slightly to the northwest-southeast and is a small domicile consisting of six rooms. Dendrochronology, archaeomagnetic dating, ceramic dating, and relative dating based on architectural styles suggests that the site was constructed between AD 650-700. Chindi Hamlet was assigned by investigators to the Tres Bobos Subphase (AD 600-700) of the Sagehen Phase (AD 600-850). It is postulated by investigators that the nuclear family first occupied Pithouses 1 and 2 and growth of the family into an extended required additional living quarters (Pithouse 1).
