Summary
The COP conducted road improvement and storm drain upgrades along 35th in southwest Phoenix. These improvements include new road construction (that is, widening), the installation of new fire hydrants and catch basins, curbs, gutters, sidewalks, bus bays, signs, trees, and trenching for new storm drains and connectors. Generally, such activities entail vertical excavations up to approximately 16 feet.
Two prehistoric features, a pit house and a hearth, were uncovered and represent, along with sherds, the known manifestation of new cultural resource site AZ T:12:269 (ASM). Two new prehistoric canal segments were uncovered, sites AZ T:12:270 (ASM) and AZ T:12:272 (ASM), the latter presumably being Canal Laveen. One historic site, AZ T:12:271 (ASM) was uncovered. The site includes one canal segment with two channels and two trash concentrations. One historic site, AZ T:12:271 (ASM) was uncovered. Sites AZ T:12:269 (ASM), AZ T:12:270 (ASM), and AZ T:12:272 (ASM), Canal Laveen, are recommended as eligible for the National Register of Historic Places (National Register). Site AZ T:12:271 (ASM) is recommended not eligible for the National Register.
