Archaeological Test Excavations and Plan for Data Recovery at AZ BB:9:50 (ASM), the Gibbon Springs Site, Pima County, Arizona

Author(s): Mark Slaughter; David A. Phillips, Jr.

Year: 1993

Summary

From January 25 to March 5, 1993, SWCA, Inc. Environmental Consultants conducted an archaeological testing program at AZ BB:9:50 (ASM), the Gibbon Springs Site, Pima County, Arizona. The test excavations were conducted for the Perini Land and Development Company, in conformance with Pima County regulations for grading permits. The plan of work for testing (SWCA 1993) was developed in response to a Request for Proposals (RFP) issued by the Centre for Archaeological Field Training, Pima Community College (PCC 1992). Actual testing was based on the plan plus modifications made at the request of the county archaeologist (Phillips 1993a) and as part of a supplementary consultation effort (Phillips 1993b).

During the testing phase, R. Thomas Euler served as project manager, David Phillips was principal investigator, Mark Slaughter was field supervisor, and Laural Myers was lab supervisor. Fieldwork was conducted by landowner permission and under a voluntary antiquities permit (No. 93- 33) from the Arizona State Museum.

After testing was underway, it became apparent that the project would become a federal undertaking, due to the need to submit a Section 404 permit application (under the Clean Water Act) to the Los Angeles District, Corps of Engineers. The purpose of this monograph is to present the results of testing and to propose a data recovery plan that is consistent with Pima County and federal historic preservation standards.
