Data Recovery at AZ EE:9:117, a Small Site along the Santa Cruz River North of Nogales, Arizona

Author(s): Deborah L. Swartz

Year: 2000

Summary

The project along South River Road was conducted for Santa Cruz County prior to road improvements. The data recovery focused on a single site, AZ EE:9:117 (ASM), a small fieldhouse site along the Santa Cruz River, with a prehistoric and a historic-period component. The prehistoric component included two pithouse remnants, numerous extramural pits, and one unique mortuary feature. Dates recovered through several different methods suggest a long, low-intensity, prehistoric use of the site from A.D. 750 to 1100 with the most intensive occupation probably during the Colonial period (A.D. 750-950). There are also indications of a low-level protohistoric use of the site between A.D. 1480 to 1545.

The historic-period occupation was between 1886 and 1900. Only a portion of the historical component was within the right-of-way, and it did not include any structures. Several burned pits, that may have been campfires, were excavated. Structural remains outside the right-of-way and evidence of on-site butchering indicate that the historic-period occupation was probably more substantial than the excavated remains suggest.
