Archaeological Testing at Valencia Vieja West, AZ BB:13:15 (ASM)
Author(s): Ellen C. Ruble
Year: 1999
Summary
Archaeological testing was conducted in the northwest portion of the Valencia site, AZ BB:13:15 (ASM), to determine if significant subsurface archaeological remains were present in a City of Tucson parcel that may be acquired and developed by Pima Community College. The information collected from this project contributes to defining Valencia Vieja, the Early Ceramic period occupation of the Valencia site. Fifteen new features were discovered in 1,120 m of backhoe trenches that were strategically placed across the parcel. Architectural details, the location of houses, and ceramic data suggest that this portion of Valencia Vieja is an extension of the Tortolita and a late Agua Caliente component of the site. Portions of the Valencia site that were located on Arizona State Trust Land and land owned by the City of Tucson were placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. Included in the National Register boundaries is AZ BB:13:74 (ASM), a Middle Rincon subphase site, and the City of Tucson parcel tested during this project. Results from this phase of testing, the assessment of potential effects, and recommendations are provided in this report.
