Summary

The Dolores Archaeological Project held a contract from the Bureau of Reclamation from June 1978 to December 1985. Breternitz demonstrates that although the archaeological investigations preceded the contact period, the failures, accomplishments, negative and positive aspects of the project, and comparisons with other major mitigation projects offer academic, methodological, and historical lessons which are instructive for projects in the future that are federally funded long-term mitigation projects.
