  • ABORIGINAL SETTLEMENT IN THE APALACHEE REGION OF FLORIDA (1998)
    DOCUMENT Full-Text Michael (Mike) Wisenbaker.

This paper discusses types of archaeological and historic sites presently found within the Woodville Karst Plain. Site there range in age from Paleo-Indian (12,000 to 10,000 B.P.) to mid-20th Century historic sites. They range in type and function from burial mounds to small special use sites. The karst features such as sinkholes and springs, would have been especially attractive to Native Americans in that they not only provided water during times of lower water tables, but also exposed...

  • An Archaeological and Historical Report on Jackson Blue Springs and Merritt's Millpond, Jackson County, Florida (2002)
DOCUMENT Full-Text Michael (Mike) Wisenbaker. Christina Halperin.

What Blue Springs County Park lacks in size, it makes up for in cultural resources, both in terms of density and variety. For example, three archaeological sites were recorded within the park at the time of state acquisition. While the CARL Archaeological Survey intended to do a typical reconnaissance survey there, we ended up doing mostly gratis mitigation work to help Jackson County save money. Consequently, much work still needs to be done to get a better and clearer understanding of the...

  • An Archaeological and Historical Survey of Bald Point State Park, Franklin County, Florida (2001)

The CARL Archaeological Survey made four visits to Bald Point State Park. These visits occurred in December 1999 and on March 2000, June 2000 and April 2001. The first three visits were done to test and mitigate any damage that may have resulted from scheduled construction activities in the park for proposed new amenities such as storage areas, boardwalks, picnic tables, parking areas, etc. On the other hand, after specific testing had been completed on those three visits we performed some...

  • The Origins and Age of the Stone Wall (8M01446) site at Lignumvitae Key (2017)
    DOCUMENT Full-Text Michael (Mike) Wisenbaker.

Near the end of June in 2016, I traveled to the Florida Keys with Arie Larson, who acts as DEP's Division of State Lands (Office of Environmental Services) land management review coordinator. State agencies that manage lands covering 1,000 or more acres of property owned by the Florida Board of Trustees are mandated by law to undergo a land management review every five years. Although DHR lacks a specific statutory role in this process, we occasionally participate in some of these field reviews...

  • A Preliminary Report on Archaeological and Historical Resources within the Recent Addition to Bald Point State Park (2004)

DHR archaeologists made several visits to Bald Point State Park from 1999 through 2001 to look for and better document historical resources within this newly acquired park (Wisenbaker and Swann 2001 ). In 2003, however, Bald Point State Park grew by 2,851 acres, more than tripling the size of the park. Early in 2004, Park Specialist Bonnie Allen called us to tell us about several unrecorded sites that she had discovered within this addition. In so doing, she invited us to come to the park to...
