A Cultural Resources Sample Survey of Operation Zones, Barry M. Goldwater Range, Marine Corps Air Station, Yuma, Arizona
Author(s): Jeffrey Altschul; Bruce A. Jones
Year: 1989
Summary
From June to September 1989, Statistical Research conducted a non-collection Class II cultural resources survey of 5,200 acres within the R2301W segment of the Barry M. Goldwater Range in Yuma County, Arizona. The areas targeted for survey conformed to topographic surfaces on which archaeologists had found sites in the past. These areas were concentrated in the Baker Peaks and northern Copper Mountain regions as well as the eastern flanks of the Tinajas Altas and Gila Mountain ranges.
The survey located and documented 43 sites (37 prehistoric, 5 historic, and 1 multicomponent site) and 71 isolated finds. The majority of sites are located within bajada and mountain edge areas and consist of predominantly lithic and sherd scatters and cleared circles. A variety of additional site types were located in lesser numbers. Historic properties consisted largely of mining-related features near mountains and hills.
The results of the survey, together with past work in the area, were used to develop an overarching research design for the project. This design not only presents research questions and data requirements, but also specifies additional survey requirements and outlines a testing program. Based on this design, 17 sites recorded during the survey were recommended to be either eligible or potentially eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places.
Document chapters include the project history and background, sample survey strategy, survey results, evaluation of survey results, and direction of future research.
