Villages of Tortolita: Phase II Data Recovery at AZ AA:7:500 (ASM) and AZ AA:12:682 (ASM), Town of Marana, Pima and Pinal Counties, Arizona

Summary
Phase II data recovery was conducted at AZ AA:7:500 (ASM) and AZ AA:12:682 (ASM) on the Villages of Tortolita property after Phase I data recovery revealed the presence of subsurface cultural deposits. Forty-five features were identified during Phase II data recovery at AZ AA:7:500 (ASM), including pit structures, roasting pits, miscellaneous extramural pits, middens, surface rock concentrations, and cremations. At AZ AA:12:682 (ASM), five highly ephemeral, poorly defined features (charcoal stains and a cluster of cobbles) were investigated.
Decorated ceramics recovered at AZ AA:7:500 (ASM) from the Pioneer, Colonial, and Sedentary periods were recovered from feature contexts, suggesting a long occupation of the site (ca. A.D. 600-1150); however, the small number of pit structures suggested very low-intensity use of the area over a long period of time. The material culture assemblage offered few surprises, with ceramics, flaked stone, ground stone, faunal remains, paleobotanical remains, and pollen samples highly typical of low-elevation pre-Classic Hohokam sites in the greater Tucson Basin.
Because there were only a few Tanque Verde Red-on-brown sherds at AZ AA:12:682(ASM) and because of the badly disturbed features as a result of agricultural activities, very little could be inferred regarding the Classic period human activity in the area between Los Robles and the Marana Mound site.
