Salt-Gila (Fannin-McFarland) Aqueduct Archaeological Data Collection Studies and Supplemental Class III Survey Project
Part of: Salt-Gila (Fannin-McFarland) Aqueduct
The Salt-Gila (Fannin-McFarland) Aqueduct begins at the terminus of the Granite Reef (Hayden-Rhodes) Aqueduct just east of Phoenix and south of the Salt River. This aqueduct consists of the Salt-Gila Pumping Plant and about 57.5 miles of open, concrete-lined canal and one major inverted siphon with a length of 0.6 miles. The pumping plant lifts the water 86 feet from the Granite Reef Aqueduct to the Salt-Gila Aqueduct.
This collection presents the results of the the Salt-Gila Aqueduct Archaeological Data Collection Studies and Supplemental Class 3 Survey Project (SGA). It includes the report series describing cultural resource investigations associated with planning, construction, and maintenance of the Salt Gila Aqueduct. The archaeological research focused on data recovery at those sites potentially subject to impact as a consequence of water delivery system construction. Salt-Gila Aqueduct Central Arizona Project construction occured along a route extending 97 km from a point south of Apache Junction, Arizona, to the Picacho Reservoir.
The SGA research design focused on three themes. Foremost, research addressed the effects of local environmental conditions upon the occupants of environmentally distinct areas. Secondly, it considered the economic and social relationships among groups occupying these areas. Finally, it examined diachronic changes in the relationships among groups in these areas. In addressing these research themes, the project sought to make significant contributions to our understanding of the Hohokam system's regional development.
The Salt-Gila Aqueduct Archaeological Data Collection Studies and Supplemental Class III Survey final report series includes the following volumes:
Volume I. Research Design,
Volume II. Supplemental Archaeological Survey,

Volume V. Small Habitation Sites on Queen Creek
Volume VI. Habitation Sites on the Gila River,
Volume VII. Environment and Subsistence,
Volume VIII. Material Culture,
Volume IX. Synthesis and Conclusions
