Salt-Gila Aqueduct (Fannin-McFarland Aqueduct) Archaeological Data Collection Studies and Supplemental Class III Survey Project
Summary
This project presents a series of publications associated with the Salt-Gila Aqueduct Archaeological Data Collection Studies and Supplemental Class III Survey Project (SGA). The research focused on data recovery at those sites potentially subject to impact as a consequence of Central Arizona Project construction. Salt-Gila Aqueduct Central Arizona Project construction occured along a route extending 97 km from a point south of Apache Junction, Arizona, to the Picacho Reservoir.
Significant archaeological sites identified as potentially subject to direct impacts were principally Hohokam; however, four of the sites had possible Archaic components (Stein 1979a). The SGA data collection sample included substantial habitation sites, smaller habitation sites that may have been fieldhouse locations, and a variety of specialized activity sites (including agricultural systems). The sites are located in a variety of environmental contexts, including the Gila River Valley, major intermittent drainages, and interdrainage areas.
Due to the environmental, functional, and chronological diversity of these archaeological sites in the project area, the SGA research design focused on three themes. Foremost, research addressed the effects of local environmental conditions upon the occupants of environmentally distinct areas. Secondly, it considered the economic and social relationships among groups occupying these areas. Finally, it examined diachronic changes in the relationships among groups in these areas. In addressing these research themes, the project sought to make significant contributions to our understanding of the Hohokam system's regional development.
