Archaeological Investigations at Nine Sites in the Madera Highlands Development, Pima County, Arizona

Author(s): Jerry D. Lyon

Year: 2005

Summary

Between March 27 and June 1, 2001, SWCA Environmental Consultants conducted archaeological investigations at nine archaeological sites on the 920-acre Madera Highlands property owned by Harvard Investments. The property encompasses lower bajada ridges and upper river terraces on the east side of the Santa Cruz River near the towns of Continental and Green Valley, Pima County, Arizona.

The SWCA's excavations at Madera Highlands involved testing and data recovery at nine ridgetop sites in the Continental Group. The sites were situated strategically below wild bajada and mountain resources, overlooking arable alluvial fans where washes disgorge from the bajada, and a short distance from irrigable bottom land. Architectural remains at eight small sites represented five or fewer pit houses, but multiple courtyard groups were identified at one large site. The sites were occupied during the Rincon-Tanque Verde transition.
