Digital Archive of Huhugam Archaeology (DAHA)

advanced

The Digital Archive of Huhugam Archaeology contains over 1,200 digital datasets, documents, reports and images focused on the ancient Huhugam (1500 B.C. – 1450 A.D.) of the southwestern U.S. These files are primarily “grey literature,” that is, unpublished reports and data sets that would otherwise be difficult to obtain.

By creating this collection, we hope this comprehensive archive will:

  • Transform scholars’ ability to answer questions about Huhugam society and will provide crucial long-term data for comparative studies.
  • Give Indigenous communities access to a wealth of archaeological research on ancestral populations.
  • Allow the general public to obtain information about this fascinating ancient culture by directly accessing the digital archive.

Archive development is guided by a crowd-sourced survey and workshops designed to understand the needs of diverse users. The archive will be curated by tDAR, an established digital repository that provides free Web discovery and access to its holdings and pursues a robust program of digital data preservation.

To find out more about using the collection, please visit the DAHA project website at https://daha.tdar.org

  • Agave Typologies of Richinbar, Pueblo la Plata, and Pueblo Pato Archaeological Sites of Agua Fria National Monument (2004)
    DOCUMENT Full-Text Todd Passick.

The purpose of this paper is to examine the agave surrounding three different pueblos located in the Agua Fria National Monument and to separate them into typologies which can then be compared to known species in the area to determine weather hyrbridiaztion had occurred. This analysis will help determine whether agaves on these three fields have been hybridized, either intentionally by early inhabitants, or by natural occurrences. This is done by placing the plants into groups based on...

  • Agricultural Impacts on Soil Compaction and Sediment Size (2005)
    DOCUMENT Full-Text Katie Johnson.

Many activities affect soil composition, wind, rain, volcanic activity, time, and mammals are just a few examples. Humans are one of the many organisms that affect soil; however they have a measurable impact in a short horizon of time compared to many of the other agents of soil formation. Human activities impact soil formation in many ways ranging from agricultural practices to building and mining, and even war. Understanding how agricultural processes impact the landscape is helpful as it...

  • The Agricultural Landscape of Perry Mesa: Modeling Residential Site Location in Relation to Arable Land (2007)
    DOCUMENT Full-Text Melissa Kruse.

The prevailing interpretations of settlement patterns in the Perry Mesa region of central Arizona (ca. A.D. 1275-1400) focus on the defensive posture of the large aggregated villages. Other factors that may have influenced the locations of residential settlements, such as the distribution of agricultural land, have not been fully explored. This study addresses these issues by examining the relationship between residential site size and the distribution of agricultural land. The environmental...

DOCUMENT Full-Text Uploaded by: Lauren Jelinek

Between October 1980 and February 1981, Northland Research, Inc. conducted an archaeological survey of undeveloped lands on the west half of the Ak Chin Indian Reservation (Ak Chin Community). In the slightly more than 7,000 acres surveyed, Northland field crews recorded 51 archaeological sites belonging to the prehistoric Hohokam and historic Papago cultures. Test excavations were undertaken at several of these sites, and the results demonstrate conclusively the presence of preserved subsurface...

  • Amerind Pleistocene Lake I, The Archaeology of the Willcox Playa (1985)
DOCUMENT Full-Text Anne I. Woosley. D. Carol Kriebel.

Our 1985 survey of the Willcox Playa environs resulted in a wealth of Archeological data, the findings of which are presented in the following chapters. We have added to the Archaic database from the Cazador through San Pedro stages of the Cochise sequence, and suggest a tentative Archaic settlement system integrated with local habitats and accompanying resources. Though it is a partial picture, the ceramic period settlement system is also beginning to emerge. Our knowledge of the early ceramic...

  • The Ancient Agroecology of Perry Mesa: Integrating Runoff, Nutrients, and Climate (2013)
    DOCUMENT Full-Text Melissa Kruse-Peeples.

Understanding agricultural land use requires the integration of natural factors, such as climate and nutrients, as well as human factors, such as agricultural intensification. Employing an agroecological framework, I use the Perry Mesa landscape, located in central Arizona, as a case study to explore the intersection of these factors to investigate prehistoric agriculture from A.D. 1275-1450. Ancient Perry Mesa farmers used a runoff agricultural strategy and constructed extensive alignments,...

  • The Anthropogenic Landscape of Las Capas, an Early Agricultural Irrigation Community in Southern Arizona (2015)
DOCUMENT Full-Text Uploaded by: Rachel Fernandez

Las Capas, AZ AA:12:111 (ASM), so named for its deeply stratified deposits, dates primarily to the San Pedro phase of the Early Agricultural period, circa 1200-800 B.C. Later, more sporadic occupation of the site extends from the Cienega phase (800 B.C.-A.D. 50) through the Hohokam sequence and the Protohistoric period. Occupation prior to approximately 2100 B.C. is suggested by several radiocarbon dates on maize found redeposited in younger contexts. Recent excavations at the site and its...
